The National Planning Awards 2008
The Irish Planning Institute National Planning Awards 2008, sponsored by Tesco Ireland, the Heritage Council and Tipperary Institute, were held in Dublin on 28 February 2008. The Institute was particularly excited at the new category which was introduced to the National Planning Awards in this year regarding participatory planning; a category which was won overall by the Kinvara Community Group, for their exemplary work in the Kinvara Integrated Area Plan.
The 2008 winners included:
Category A - Planning Achievement Award
The Planning Achievement Award, sponsored by Tesco Ireland, gives recognition to planning strategies, schemes or developments, which have made an outstanding contribution to the quality of life in the physical environment, in urban and rural Ireland. The scope of projects to be considered for the awards includes published plan and studies, projects involving community participation, and significant physical development, either at a regional or local scale.
- South Dublin Co. Co.: Winners of Planning Achievement Award: Cert of Merit for Tallaght Integrated Area Plan 1999-2008
- O' Mahoney Pike Architects: Planning Achievement Award: Winners of Certificate of Merit for North Drogheda Masterplan.
Category B - Urban Design Award
The Urban Design Award, sponsored by Tesco Ireland, is presented in respect of a building, group of buildings or space completed since January 2006, which demonstrate innovation and sensitivity in design, and/or use to its setting.

Category C - Conservation Award
The Planning Achievement in Conservation Award, sponsored by the Heritage Council, gives recognition to planning strategies, schemes or developments which are heritage-led, and which have made an outstanding contribution to the conservation, management and enhancement of any aspect(s) of our natural heritage.
- Cork County Council: Conservation Award Cert of Merit for Guidance Notes for the Appraisal of Historic Gardens, Demesnes and their Settings
Category D - Planning Achievement in Participatory Planning Award* [New Award Category]
The Planning Achievement in Participatory Planning, sponsored by Tipperary Institute, reflected a new Award category, which was added in recognition of the fundamental advantages associated with actively involving a multiplicity of stakeholders throughout planning processes.
- Planning Achievement in Participatory Planning- Kinvara Community Council and Galway Council Council for Kinvara Integrated Area Plan.
